GET ORIENTED
Let's see if the Hanauma Bay Education Program's volunteer position is a good fit for you. Please complete the items below to get better acquainted with Hanauma Bay and the responsibilities of every HBEP volunteer.
You will begin with a Pre-Tutorial Survey to see what you may already know about the park and our program. Then you will be given some learning materials and prompts to assess your knowledge and ultimately help you decide if you would like to continue with our in-person training sessions.
We appreciate your taking the time to participate and learn more about our program.

*Please keep in mind that some of the information included in this orientation refer to park operations, amenities, or volunteer duties that were in place prior to COVID-19. They may not all currently be in use due to safety precautions or availability, but will ideally return as the situation allows.
HBEP POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Your first task is to read through the Hanauma Bay Education Program's Policies and Procedures that are provided in the HBEP Volunteer Handbook. Read carefully as the information described here will assist you with this orientation. Click on the document icon to the right for a PDF version.
THEATER INTRODUCTION SPEECH
During your time in the theater, you will eventually be speaking in front of crowds of up to 30 people under the current Pilot Program with COVID-19 restrictions. Eventually, we may return to presenting the orientation film to groups of up to 125 people. The theater introduction speech provides visitors with important information not included in the orientation film, which will help to make their visit both enjoyable and safe. Click on the document icon to the right for sample scripts and helpful tips to prepare you for when you will be asked to recite this introduction.

The main points to include in your Theater Introduction Speech are:
-
Face masks are not required only after going through the theater orientation but are needed when accessing park concessionaires. Physical distancing is still encouraged indoors and outdoors.
-
Reef etiquette - avoid damaging the reef. "Look, but don't touch."
-
No smoking, alcohol, ball playing, or drones allowed in the nature preserve.
-
Restrooms, showers, and water fountains available at the beach.
-
Nothing for sale at the beach level, but visitors are welcome to bring food and snorkel equipment.
-
Snorkel gear and locker rental concession is located on the beach.
-
The snack bar is in the upper park only.
What we usually include, but are not yet available due to COVID-19:
-
Beach re-entry hand stamp available outside the theater. (admission receipts are currently used to gain same-day re-entry)
-
Repeat Visitor's List only available in theater and is good for one year. (not available at this time)

*The City & County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation updated the Hanauma Bay website to reflect current park information and fees under the Reopening Pilot Program that was implemented in December 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of our program operations have also changed to follow these new measures that help to ensure a safe experience for volunteers and visitors alike.
